Carney aiming for Round 1

Roosters coach Brian Smith has confirmed reigning Dally M medallist Todd Carney is on track to play in his side’s season opener against South Sydney next month. Carney underwent groin surgery four weeks ago and was initially expected to miss the first four rounds of the competition. The 24-year-old will sit out Saturday’s Foundation Cup clash against Wests Tigers at the SFS but is considered an almost certain starter for Round 1 in a major boost for the Tri Colours. “Unless something goes wrong for him he’ll play in the first comp game,” Smith said on Tuesday. “We even thought about just playing him for 20 minutes in this game but he’s not quite at that stage … it’s just a little too early for him.” “We’ve still got 17 days before the comp starts and we start with Souths on Friday night so we’d obviously like him to be right for that.” “Without and mishaps between now then he’ll be fine I think.” Continue reading

More injury concerns to consider

In the NRL casualty ward there are 84 first-grade players worth more than $12 million who are out of action from between one week to the entire season. The figure was calculated using $150,000 as the average player wage. Some of those to consider are Tim Moltzen who will find out today if he is expected to be ruled out for the season, Club trainers immediately feared the 21-year-old had suffered a season-ending anterior cruciate ligament strain but are waiting for the results of yesterday’s scans before making a final diagnosis. Other concerns coming from the Cowboys v Tigers match include James Tamou (concussion) Gareth Ellis (Broken Nose, Tooth Loss) Aaron Payne (lateral ligament tear in ankle.) and Todd Payten (Calf). The Knights have also been dealt a serious blow in their bid to revive their sluggish 2010 season against the Cowboys on Saturday night. Six key players are battling injuries and in doubt. Captain Kurt Gidley (knee), Mat Hilder (shoulder), Daniel Tolar (shoulder), Evarn Tuimavave (ankle), Ben Rogers (elbow) and Scott Dureau (hip) are uncertain starters. Souths captain Roy Asotasi, who strained a knee on Saturday night, is a strong chance to be named to take on the Eels after he completed a full recovery session with teammates. Sydney City Roosters Hooker James Aubusson looks to looks to be sidelined for a month or more with a tear in his medial ligament on Sunday and no damage was done to the anterior cruciate ligament which kept him sidelined for the back end of 2009.

Where there’s a will, there’s a Galloway!

Prop Keith Galloway has insisted “Anything less than a finals berth would be a “dead set failure” for Wests Tigers in the 2010 NRL season”.  Backline players Benji Marshall ($256,200 HLV) and new signing Lote Tuqiri ($148,00 CTW) might grab all the headlines but as we DT Coaches know the engine room players are where its at. Sheens imposing new look forward pack consists of Jason Cayless ($120,300 FRF), Robbie Farah ($383,900 HOK) consistent machines Gareth Ellis ($240,700 2RF) and Chris Heighington ($238,300 2RF) and possible 2010 NSW Origin Player Todd Payten ($199,700 FRF). Galloway also feels the time is right for him to force the Sky Blue selectors to have a look in his direction, after playing City Country last season it was possibly only an untimely injury which kept his name out of the line up. “I felt like my form was pretty good last year. I felt like if I was there, I probably would have deserved it, but I was injured so I can’t really dwell on that. This year, fingers crossed I don’t get injured and that will be a dead set goal for me.” Keith Galloway is listed for $172,200 in the position of Front Row Forward.
