Kelly to get nod as Sharks No.7

Young gun Albert Kelly is set to start at halfback for Cronulla ahead of former rookie of the year Tim Smith when the club kicks off their NRL season in Canberra on Sunday week.

Kelly looks to have won the pre-season battle to partner ex-Penrith five-eighth Wade Graham in the halves as the Sharks look to lift themselves into top eight contenders.

The 19-year-old cousin of superstar Greg Inglis made a soul-destroying debut at fullback in round one last year before going on to play just five first grade games.

Sharks face injury crisis

Cronulla’s preparations have been thrown into disarray ahead of their NRL clash with Manly on Saturday night, with captain Trent Barrett and winger Blake Ferguson ruled out with injury. Barrett has a shoulder problem, while Ferguson hasn’t been able to recover from a rib complaint. In further bad news for Ricky Stuart’s men, halfback John Morris and NSW prop Kade Snowden are also considered only 50/50 chances of playing. Morris has a knee problem, while Snowden is suffering from an illness. Tim Smith, who was dropped last week, will compete with Scott Porter and Albert Kelly for Barrett’s five-eighth spot and Morris’ halfback position should he also be ruled out. Issac Gordon will make an earlier than expected return from a hamstring injury to replace Ferguson.

Tim Smith joins the Sharks

The Sharks have confirmed Smith has signed a deal through to the end of the 2011 NRLĀ season. Smith has been released from his dual registration with Brisbane Broncos and Queensland Cup side Easts Brisbane and will join his new Sharks teammates this week. Smith, 25, joins the Sharks with a glowing endorsement from captain Trent Barrett, who played with him at Wigan.
