Injured stars unlikely to play for Manly

Manly are unlikely to risk injured trio Jamie Lyon, Shane Rodney and Brett Stewart in next weekend’s NRL trial match against the Warriors in New Zealand. The club will find out the seriousness of Jamie Lyon’s strained ankle ligaments on Wednesday, but they are prepared to give him as much rest as possible before their season-opener against Melbourne on March 12. Coach Des Hasler said Lyon, who injured the troublesome ankle in the first half of Saturday’s NRL All Stars clash on the Gold Coast, was not in doubt for round one. In better news for the club, cult hero George Rose will not miss any football despite suffering a broken nose in the All Stars game. Continue reading

Manly awaiting scans on Stewart

Manly are confident forward Glenn Stewart’s ankle injury is not serious but will know more after scans on Monday. The former Test backrower was assisted from CUA Stadium late in Penrith’s 40-22 thrashing of the Sea Eagles on Friday night after his ankle was caught awkwardly in tackle. Coach Des Hasler is hopeful the initial diagnosis of a lower ankle sprain will be confirmed by scans. “He was walking after the game but we really won’t know until he has scans,” Hasler said. “We’ll keep our fingers crossed.” Manly have hit a rough patch after an impressive first half of the season, losing three of their past four games. They also have co-captain Jamie Lyon on the sidelines with an ankle injury until round 19. Next week’s bye has come at a good time for Hasler’s troops, whose next match is against Canberra at Brookvale Oval on July 10. “We’ll get back and we’ll assess it, get this Origin out of the way,” Hasler said. “The bye’s probably good timing for us.”
