Cowboys undecided on JTs offsider

Youngsters Ray Thompson and Ben Jones are locked in a battle for the contentious five-eighth spot in the North Queensland Cowboys side to play the Broncos at Suncorp Stadium in a round 1 NRL match on March 11.The Cowboys used six players there last season with Grant Rovelli, now with Mackay, getting the most starts (nine) in the key position. Other players tried at five-eighth were Thompson, Arana Taumata (both four games), Michael Morgan and Matt Bowen (three) and Anthony Watts (one). Taumata has signed with Penrith and Watts with the Sydney Roosters. Thompson will start in the No.6 jumper against Gold Coast Titans in Cairns tomorrow night, with Sydney Roosters signing Jones to come off the bench. Continue reading

Cowboys walking wounded as trial injuries begin to mount

Justin Hodges made a successful return to action, but former Broncos team mate Antonio Winterstein is set to miss the start of the NRL season after suffering a broken jaw. Hodges set up a try with his first touch off the bench in the Broncos’ 26-4 trial win over the Cowboys in Alice Springs on Saturday night. “He got through a continuous 40 minutes and set up a try and there was no side affects from the injury, so I’m very happy with his involvement and getting through the game,” Broncos coach Ivan Henjak told AAP. It ended more than 500 days of NRL inactivity for the classy Broncos, Queensland and Australia centre, but Cowboys recruit Winterstein had far worse misfortune on the night. He went to hospital for scans just before halftime after suffering facial injuries in a sickening collision during a tackle. Continue reading

The Penrith Panthers is another team I haven’t reviewed before and is another one of those teams who will have their final bye in round 14.

As far as Dream Team there is not a lot to get excited about at Penrith.  They don’t have anyone who has played more than 5 games averaging over 35 points a game.  The only player over 35 is Gavin Cooper (36.00) who played his 4th game of the season in round 12.  Almost as rare is finding someone who has actually increased in value from round 1.  There is no point in talking about Petro given his hand injury so here are a few of other players I have reviewed.

Gavin Cooper (2RF/Centre/Wing) @ $232,300.00, averaging 36.00Cooper has only played 4 rounds so far, playing in rounds 3, 10, 11 and 12.  For those of you considering him as an option for your backline he has made 90 tackles in three games and his scores have been 40, 32, 39 and 33.  His lowest tackle count was 25 in round 3 and a high of 35 in round 11.  His season average of 36.00 makes his current market price about $230,000.000 but he will need to score approximately 37 points in round 13 to avoid dropping in value.  The good points are his tackle count is consistently at 25 or more, he makes points in MG and OL and while he has lost 15 points from mistakes in 4 games, he was only loosing just over 2 points a game until round 11 where he lost 8.  He is worth keeping an eye on and if he keeps getting the game time he can only get better.  If he comes down a little more in value he maybe worth considering.    Continue reading

Ins and Outs

I was looking back through the news earlier in January of this year and came along an ‘Ins and Outs’ for player movements and injury concerns for this season. Mostly it was information we already knew about, but there were some injuries and their predicted returns that took me by surprise – {Bulldogs} David Stagg – shoulder (Rd 2) {Titans} Luke O’Dwyer – knee (Rd 3) Esi Tonga – shoulder (Rd 2) Aaron Cannings – shoulder (Rd 6) {Eels} Nathan Hindmarsh – wrist (indefinite) {Panthers} Jarrod Sammut – ankle (Rd 1-2) Gavin Cooper – ankle (Rd 1-2) {Rabbitohs} Michael Crocker – ankle (Rd 2) {Roosters} Braith Anasta – ankle (Rd 1) {Cowboys} Matt Bowen – knee (Rd 6) .

Now I do want you to keep in mind this information was posted early January and we all know injury times can change, but I at least wanted all coaches to know what they are considering early. How are those teams looking ? Finalised ? Changed 23 times ? Ever-growing watchlist ?
