Titans trial positions, a closer look …

The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans will roll out the big guns in Coffs Harbour this weekend, with Head Coach John Cartwright today naming a near full-strength line-up for Saturday night’s pre-season trial match against Souths. Jetstar Titans captain and halfback Scott Prince will form a new-look halves combination with Indigenous All Stars teammate Greg Bird while fellow stars Preston Campbell, Luke Bailey, Ashley Harrison, William Zillman and Coffs Harbour junior Kevin Gordon will all line up for their first pre-season matches for 2011. In a significant step for flyer David Mead, the Papua New Guinean International will play his first game since suffering a season-ending foot injury in Round 16, 2010 after being named in the starting line-up on the wing. Broncs thump Titans

A young and inexperienced Jetstar Gold Coast Titans succumbed to a disappointing loss in their first trial match of the season, going down to the Brisbane Broncos 42-18 in front of a crowd of 3,500 at Kougari Oval Wynnam. The Titans looked the better of the two sides in the early exchanges with Esi Tonga scoring two tries before the leaving the field with a broken nose and concussion. Some impressive play through half back Luke Capewell and hooker Matt Srama helped narrow the margin throughout the game but it wasn’t enough with the Broncos laying on five unanswered tries as a shell-shocked Titans side attempted to recover. Titans coach John Cartwright said tonight was an important hit-out for the youthful side. “On the whole I think everyone did pretty well,” Cartwright said. “We played well in patches, it’s just a shame the score line blew out a bit in the end. Tonga’s season is no longer

A gym accident has left Gold Coasts Esi Tonga ($104,800 CTW) season almost over before it had begun, suffering a suspected pectorial tear during the Titans pre season camp at Coffs Harbour last week the centre will undergo surgery and most likely miss 6 months of the competition. Returning from a shoulder reconstruction suffered on the eve of the Titans maiden semi final campaign, the centre was looking forward to regaining the form he found in 2009 before his shoulder injury. Coach Cartwright confirmed the bad news while citing Matt Rogers ($190,700 CTW) and Kevin Gordon ($102,900 CTW) to fill the left flank whilst Clinton Toopi (Not Listed) and Joseph Tomane ($99,700 CTW/FB) are set to battle out on the right.
