Dugan and Orford out

Canberra will face an early test of their depth when they head into Sunday’s round one NRL clash with Cronulla minus big names Josh Dugan and Matt Orford. Rising star Dugan has a calf injury and failed to train on Saturday, while veteran halfback Orford is a definite non-starter with a groin problem. Dugan is extremely doubtful and his place at fullback will be taken by David Milne. Nineteen-year-old half Sam Williams comes into the squad for Orford. Whether the 2010 Toyota Cup halfback of the year starts remains to be seen with hooker Alan Tongue a strong chance of taking over the playmaking duties. Star signing Orford, 32, has been hampered during pre-season with a groin strain and has not been able to recover in time to face the Sharks. The Raiders are already without former Test five-eighth Terry Campese until midseason after a knee reconstruction, his place taken by Josh McCrone. Continue reading

Raiders injury worries – Fensom out !

The Canberra Raiders’ already injury-depleted squad has suffered another triple setback before Saturday’s National Rugby League (NRL) match with the New Zealand Warriors in Auckland. Hooker and captain Alan Tongue has been ruled out with a groin strain, robbing the Raiders of another playmaking option after halfback Adam Mogg (calf) also failed to complete training yesterday. Tongue had been hopeful of leading the Raiders in the round eight match at Mt Smart Stadium but erred on the side of caution after the squad’s final session in the capital. With Canberra’s first bye scheduled for next week, Tongue felt he had a window to rest the nagging injury. “It’s best to sit it out unfortunately. I’m very disappointed, but it’s that time of year with the bye just in front of us that hopefully I can just miss one game and be right in the long term,” he said. Although scans cleared Mogg of any structural damage to the calf he injured against South Sydney last weekend, he would also not be risked while second rower Shaun Fensom also missed today’s flight. Tongue will be replaced at hooker by Glen Buttriss while Marc Herbert is expected to start at halfback. Josh McCrone and Troy Thompson were added to a rearranged bench. The trio’s injuries add to a casualty ward already including Joel Monaghan, Danny Galea, Travis Waddell, James Stuart, David Milne and Justin Carney.
