Panthers V Knight report

A late try to the Penrith Panthers against the Newcastle Knights on Saturday night gave the Panthers a victory in Port Macquarie. Early tries to Panthers’ Sandor Earl and Kevin Kingston gave the men from the mountains a 10-nil lead just ten minutes into the game. Lock Mark Taufua made his way accross the white line to score for the Knights, a conversion from Wes Naiqama put the Novacastrians on the score board. Another Penrith try and a Michael Gordon conversion took the first quarter score to 16-6. After a number of pushes in the Panthers half, hooker Isaac De Gois narrowed the margin to 16-10. In the 33rd minute fullback Shannon McDonnell was tackled mid air by Penrith’s Travis Burns, McDonnell left the field and watched the remainder of the game from the sideline. With Naiqama moved to fullback, impressive young recruit Siuatonga Likiliki made his way onto the field. The second half saw tries to Evarn Tuimavave and Marvin Karawana, with successful conversions by Peter Mata’utia and Cory Paterson taking the knights to 16-22. Penrith came back in the final three minutes with two tries and two successful conversions, making the final score 28-22.

Cory Paterson Injury Update

Cory Paterson will not play again this year after undergoing a shoulder reconstruction, but Knights coach Rick Stone says the towering forward can look back on 2010 with a sense of achievement. Paterson was booked in for an exploratory arthroscope on Tuesday, but once renowned shoulder specialist Dr Des Bokor realised the extent of damage, he proceeded with major surgery. The 23-year-old faces a six-month recovery period, which means he will spend much of the 2011 pre-season in recovery and rehabilitation mode, but said it was “time to bite the bullet and get it done”. Stone was disappointed to lose Paterson for the business end of Newcastle’s campaign but said the dynamic back-rower deserved credit for playing through the pain barrier in most of his 17 games this season. “He’s basically had a needle each week from round three to round 20 to get out on the park and play,” Stone said yesterday. “So it’s a testament to his character that he’s lasted that long. With Paterson out of contention, Stone is eagerly awaiting the return of Steve Simpson from a knee injury that has sidelined him for the past eight weeks. But Simpson said last week that his recovery from knee surgery was “a slow process” and he will need to make dramatic improvement to be considered for Sunday week’s game against the Warriors in Auckland.

Cory Paterson shoulder injury could be season ending

Cory Paterson’s season is almost certainly over with the Newcastle back-rower facing a shoulder reconstruction after receiving bad news on the injury yesterday.  In a bitter blow to the Knights’ hopes of resurrecting their season after last weekend’s humiliating defeat by Canberra, Paterson will sit down with coach Rick Stone and club doctor Neil Halpin on Monday to discuss his immediate playing future. Reconstructive surgery is not the only option but it appears the most likely. “It doesn’t look good, to be honest,” Paterson said. “I saw my specialist today and the news was not good. “But I want to sit down with Neil and Stoney on Monday first and I don’t know for sure [about playing again this season] until we get all the cards  on the table.” Paterson has battled an AC problem for most of the season, needing pain-killing injections just to get on the field. Prior to tonight’s clash with North Queensland in Townsville he hadn’t missed a game, but the injury has gradually worsened. “I’ve been playing ordinary and it’s got to the stage where I’m feeling like I’m becoming a liability to the team and letting the boys down,” Paterson said. “I haven’t been able to do any contact at training and I missed something like 10 tackles against the Raiders.”

Here we are with two rounds to go before the silly season starts with 7 byes from rounds 9 to 18.  Have you made preparations to cover your State Of Origin (SOO) players?  Have you had a good look at the bye rounds so you have a full team each week?  I am here to help coaches prepare for those bye rounds to minimise the impact of loosing their rep players for extended periods.

In round 9, 8 teams have a bye.  If you have key players from each of those teams you are in big trouble if you don’t have a list of 25 players scoring points each round.  Expect scores of 300 or less.

Cory Paterson pleads guilty

Knights back rower Cory Paterson last night apologised for his desperate lunge to try an attempt to prevent Adrian Purtell from scoring the match winning try for Penrith on Monday. The NRL match-review committee yesterday charged Paterson for leading with his feet following the incident but he will plead guilty to the charge today and won’t miss a game. “I didn’t mean to but it happened so quick. I was getting there late and it was just out of desperation. Your instincts take over. Thankfully, no damage was done but I’m sorry for doing it.” Paterson said “I’m just glad I won’t miss a game because of it.”
