Winged Sea Eagles lose Rodney for the season

Manly have lost workaholic back-rower Shane Rodney for the remainder of the NRL season. Rodney injured his knee in the opening minutes of Saturday night’s victory over the Warriors and the club confirmed on Tuesday he had injured his anterior cruciate ligament. “Shane is gone for the season,” coach Des Hasler said. “That is a real shame, he’s been one of our strongest and best performers this year.” The Sea Eagles have further injury concerns with backs Ben Farrar and Will Hopoate and star forward Anthony Watmough all facing fitness tests later in the week. “It’s just been one of those years, we’ve had injuries but we might get a few back,” Hasler said. “We’ll look at Ben Farrar and Will Hopoate and the week after we might get a few more back.” The Sea Eagles will face a determined Sydney outfit on Sunday after the Roosters dropped their third game in a row to the Gold Coast on Monday night.

Ben Farrar ruled out

Manly fullback Ben Farrar has been ruled out of Saturday night’s NRL match against Melbourne with a knee problem. Farrar suffered the injury in Monday night’s loss to Newcastle and is likely to miss a couple of matches. Michael Robertson will shift from wing to fill in at No.1 while young-gun Will Hopoate is in line to come onto the flanks. However, the Sea Eagles will wait to confirm whether Hopoate will start, as he too has been out of action with injury. Coach Des Hasler says Farrar’s absence is a blow but he backed Robertson to do the job. “He (Farrar) won’t play, his scans have come back and he’ll be a week, possibly two,” Hasler said. “But Robbo’s there and he’s quite experienced in that position, so we should cover that. “It is just turning up on Saturday and getting the job done.”

Hodkinson looking For an opportunity

Trent Hodkinson ($84,100 HLV)  is in a two way battle with Kieran Foran ($214,900 HLV) to secure the halback position along side Jamie Lyon ($218,300 HLV), which was vacated by Matt Orford who has moved to England. A former Parramatta low grader, Hodkinson has been training strongly while Foran has been missing due to injury. The pair will have a final trial match against the Warriors in 11 days before coach Des Hasler names his new No.7. Coach Hasler was, as always, playing his cards close to his chest but did not rule out starting both against the Tigers in Round 1. “There is a process we are working through. It’s all about opportunity and they have to step up to the mark. Jamie is an option in the halves but he’s also a handy centre.” Jamie Lyon has played centre at a test level but Manly will have to consider Ben Farrar ($104,100 CTW/HLV) and Steve Matai ($103,900 CTW), Farrar has also played on the wing but again have David Williams ($102,800 CTW) and Michael Robertson ($91,100 CTW) to consider if a reshuffle were to take place.
