Last night at Cronulla Stadium Jamie Lyon ($218,300 HLV) put his hand up to fill the positions vacant left by departing captain Matt Orford. Although youngsters Kieran Foran ($214,900 HLV) and Trent Hodkinson ($84,100 HLV) shared the Halfback position throughout the match, it was a dominant display by Lyon setting up two tries in the second half. Both the Sharks and Manly sent out new recruits and up and comers early, but it was the big guns who came out in the second half to finish off a sometimes spiteful match. Brett Stewart ($146,800 FLB) showed a glimpse of his flair in a solid game, when in the 58th minute a scuffle broke out after he was heavily tackled in goal. Only minutes later heavyweights Josh Perry and Kade Snowden went toe to toe, with Snowden being Sin Binned. Cronulla however were allowed to compete with 13 players on the field under trial match rules. “The conditions were pretty tough.” Hasler stated “It was ok, it was just a trial. We had a lot of players getting the off-season cobwebs out, the boys have just done a really long off-season so they were just keen to play.” Hasler was also pleased with his young halves after the departure of Orford “We’re fortunate we’ve got young Trent and Keiran as well, so we’re pretty well covered there,” he said.

Cronulla’s night went from bad to worse when it was revealed they exited the match with injuries to two of their Troops – Dean Collis ($120,500 CTW) hyperextended his right knee, but is expected back for round one and 19 yr old hopeful Stewart Mills had to be stretchered off in the first half after damaging his right knee, his season all but over before it has begun.
